About Beyond the Ghetto

Beyond the Ghetto (BTG) is the official publication and newsletter of a subgroup of the national organization Women Doing Philosophy. Our name is drawn from a shared mission: to bring women’s works in philosophy out of the margins—out of the “ghetto”—and into the philosophical mainstream. Founded in 2020 by Dr. Jean P. Tan (Ateneo de Manila University), BTG began as a humble mailing list where Jean shared think pieces and reflections written by herself, fellow women philosophers, and feminist allies. Over time, this small circle of shared thought grew into a vibrant community, prompting the migration of BTG to Substack, where it now lives as a dedicated space for feminist philosophical engagement.

Since 2022, BTG has been led by Dr. Noelle Leslie dela Cruz (De La Salle University), who now serves as chair of the core committee. Under her leadership, BTG has continued its monthly webinars and lectures, as well as introduced reading group discussions—all the while continuing to publish thoughtful, incisive writing curated by Jean, who remains editor of article submissions. This site, maintained by Les, serves as a living archive of BTG’s activities, updates, and ideas.

We welcome article submissions (600–1,000 words) that explore philosophical or interdisciplinary issues from a critical feminist perspective. Send us your pieces or questions at btheghetto@gmail.com—we’d love to hear from you.
