Talking Bodies

BTG webinar no. 8 recorded video - 6 November 2021

In this event, which is moderated by Ms. Cassandra Teodosio, the speakers explore dimensions of embodiment in relation to aesthetics, spirituality, and politics. Aves Avecilla talks about Simone Weil’s The Love of God and Affliction. Taz Albano discusses bell hooks’ representations of black female sexuality. Finally, Darlene Demandante explores how bodies can be instrumental for political mobilization.

About the speakers:

Ms. Anamarie Avecilla is an instructor at the Ateneo de Manila University. Her master’s thesis was on the problem of freedom and determinism using Kant’s answer in the Third Antinomy as epistemological framework. Her current research interests include questions on the compatibilism of causality and spontaneity, and the possibility of spiritual practice as mass action.

Dr. Taz Albano is an Assistant Professor of the Department of Philosophy at the Ateneo de Manila University. She works on topics in philosophy of art and aesthetics, men’s studies and philosophy of love and sex, particularly on issues related to feminist aesthetics and objectification. Her current research includes body aesthetics, ruin porn and boys’ love.

Dr. Darlene Demandante’s research interest broadly revolves around the role of subjects in social and political emancipation. In particular, her aim is to investigate the relationship between the material aspects of political subjectivity (corporeality, affects, dreams or aspirations) and the struggle of political subjects against various forms of oppression through real, concrete, and creative means of asserting their agency. Demandante teaches philosophy at the University of Santo Tomas, Philippines.
