It is our pleasure to introduce bimonthly book discussions to commence in November 2021!
In keeping with BTG's vision of mainstreaming women's works in philosophy, we will regularly close-read an important work by a woman philosopher. Reclaiming the often derogatory term “bluestocking,” which codes reading as male and derides women who do it, this activity will give us the opportunity to:
• Discover the ideas of women philosophers, both famous and obscure;
• Explore texts we've always wanted to read, but have not had the time to do so;
• Revisit works that we're familiar with, gleaning new insights about them; and
• Indulge the oft-ignored impulse for pleasure-reading.
The following is the tentative schedule of works and lead discussants. By next year, we hope to open Bluestocking to your choice of works and volunteer discussants:
1. November 19, 2021: "Complaint" by Sara Ahmed (Dr. Noelle Leslie dela Cruz, De La Salle University)
2. January 22, 2022: "The Right to Sex: Feminism in the 21st Century" by Amia Srinivasan (Ms. Rowie Azada-Palacios, University College London and Ateneo de Manila University)
3. March 19, 2022: "On the Question of Women’s Liberation” by He-Yin Zhen (Dr. Christine Tan, Yale-NUS, Singapore)
4. May 21, 2022: "Camera Obscura: Of Ideology" by Sarah Kofman (Dr. Jean P. Tan, Ateneo de Manila University)
5. July 16, 2022: "Intersectionality as Critical Theory" by Patricia Hill Collins (Kelly Louise Agra, University College Dublin and University of the Philippines-Baguio)
Reading guide questions and Zoom links will follow as the date for each discussion nears.
Be with us as we embark on this exciting new initiative!
